With 25 years of training yoga teachers SOYA has transformed into an Academy owned by Marion (Mugs) and Robert McConnell. SOYA offers one of the most diverse and accessible yoga teacher training programs in full-time immersion and part-time formats, in these locations:
Penticton, Prince George, Vancouver area (Pitt Meadows), Creston, BC, Calgary, AB, and Mexico.

With its roots in the Sivananda lineage, and guided by the highest standards, SOYA gives students a diverse and broad exposure to many styles, lineages and philosophies. Ever evolving, SOYA’s Teacher Training is designed with flexibility, accessibility and transformation at its heart.

SOYA’s lead trainers have extensive experience teaching, training and are dedicated to continued study. Some of the master yoga teachers they have had the blessing to study with include Dr. Hari Dickman, Swami Vishnudevananda, Pattabhi Jois, Namadeva Acharya, Erich Schiffmann, Rod Stryker and Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani (son of Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri). SOYA is proud to offer students exposure to lineages or styles such as Ashtanga, Sivananda, Yin, Restorative, and Vinyasa, as well as Mantra, Mudra, and other practices.

South Okanagan Yoga Academy has trained over 700 teachers at the 200, 300 Advanced Upgrade and 500 hour levels. We offer ongoing support to our students after graduation as they advance their skills as teachers. The SOYA website at www.soyayoga.com has all the details on our yoga teacher training. After completing the 500 hour certification SOYA teachers are eligible to apply for RYT500 with Yoga Alliance, and as Full Teaching Members with the International Yoga Teachers’ Association (IYTA). We endeavour to open students’ world up to the many paths available to them so that they may find their path. As Swami Sivananda once said, “The paths are many, the Truth is One”.

Reviews

As part of the Yoga Alliance Social Credentialing system, teachers that register with Yoga Alliance must submit a review of the RYS training program they completed.

Feedback from trainees provides Registered Yoga Schools with the opportunity to understand their trainees’ experiences in order to continually improve their trainings.

By choosing to display comments, schools enable trainees to provide insight into a school’s culture and training which helps potential trainees choose the right teacher training for their individual path with yoga.

The SOYA program was an incredible experience that covered everything (& more) I hoped for in a yoga teacher training program. One of the best parts about this program is you start practicing teaching right away so by the time you graduate you are confident and ready - you even have a whole set of lesson plans created! The lead trainer & mentors & guest speakers were supportive, inspiring and above all kind & compassionate to each and every student. I would highly recommend this program to any aspiring teacher!

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about SOYA :) I took my 200 hour training with them and continued into my 300 hour. Even with all of the changes that happened in the last 6 months with COVID-19 SOYA worked really hard to make sure the training went ahead as scheduled using zoom. I LOVED both My teachers - they were very knowledgeable and took extra time and care to make sure everyone knew What was expected of them and made the zoom classes interactive, fun and easy to follow. I would Highly recommend going through SOYA For your teaching certification.

Thank you so much Chloe. It has been strange times, and in spite of it we all did our best. It is wonderful to have had this experience with you. Your students will be so lucky to have you as a teacher.

This program far exceeded my expectations. I appreciated how it delved deep into philosophy with the Baghavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras with plenty of time for philosophy discussions. I started the program thinking that I did not want to teach yoga, only to deepen my understanding, and I left the program not only feeling ready to teach yoga but with a deep desire to share the knowledge I had gained through this training with others. I have nothing but good things to say about SOYA, about my lead trainer Natasha Scott, and about all the guest yogis they brought in throughout the program. After researching dozens of YTT options, I am so happy that I chose to go with SOYA!

I had such an amazing journey with SOYA (South Okanagan Yoga Academy) for my 200 YTT! It was so well rounded, designed to give you a foundation of knowledge about Hatha Yoga techniques, philosophy, anatomy, and teaching methods. The SOYA community is so supportive and so encouraging that you can't help but feel confident and celebrated when you teach your very first yoga class. I completed my hours and am so inspired to learn more, experience more, and grow with the SOYA community!

The SOYA program is so rich with knowledge and dives deep into so many aspects of yoga. I felt confident training with SOYA and very grateful for the opportunity to meet some very inspiring teachers and students alike. I would recommend their training program to anyone who is thinking about doing a 200hr or a 300hr. Thank you SOYA!
